  • Our Quest

Our quest is to produce some of the finest wines born out of this New World wine making country. South Africa has a magnificent diverse range of topography, climates and soil types. The two varietals that I concentrate on are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir and have been long since regarded as challenging in that they are sensitive to prolonged heat units that over ripen and destroy flavours.
  • Our Quest

My aim is to search for the coolest climates that our country has to offer and in doing so select vineyards that are of higher altitude with an elevated aspect. This allows for cooler, milder summers resulting in slower phenolic ripeness. These vineyards may be situated between 250meters and 300 meters above sea level. In some cases an additional advantage is the cool anabatic breeze that blows up and over the mountain ranges. This breeze originates from the Atlantic ocean with its cold Benguela current.
  • OUR Quest

The soil profiles on these mountain slopes are some of the oldest in the world and consist of sandstone, gravel, decomposed granite and clay soils. With these cooler summers the slower ripening gives rise to grapes harvested with a lower ph. and an abundance of delicate fruit flavours.
  • OUR Quest

Due to the harvesting temperatures being lower the juice is colder when crushed at the cellar thus lowers the risk of oxidation, this also assists the winemaker in minimising the addition of sulphates. Our wines are typical of this phenomenon and makes achieving our goal more worthwhile.

MEET MARK

“Our wines are born from pure passion that express the terroir and climate in every bottle”

Mark Dendy Young has been crafting wines for two decades. Mark has always envied the advantage that his fellow producers had of crafting wines from cool high lying vineyards.

Now he has the advantage of the wonderful “terroir” of the Elgin Valley, situated in the Overberg region amongst the Hottentots Holland Mountains bordering the Koegelberg Nature reserve.
